Taobao, Inc. Marketplace (formerly "Taobao") was founded in May 2003 by Alibaba after eBay purchased Eachnet, China's online auction leader as at then for US$180 million and became a significant player in the consumer e-commerce business market. As of October 2013 it was the eighth most visited site in China.
Taobao is presently a Chinese online shopping site, located in Hangzhou, and owned by Alibaba. It is ranked as the eighth most visited site according to Alexa Website ranking. Taobao.com was registered on April 21st, 2003 by Alibaba Cloud Computing (Beijing) Co., Ltd.
In April 2008, Taobao presented a newly committed business-to-consumer platform called Taobao Mall to complement its consumer-to-consumer marketplace. Taobao Mall set up itself as the destination for quality brand name products for Chinese consumers. Taobao Mall launched a free web domain, Tmall.com, and upgraded its attention on product verticals and improvements in shopping experience around November 2010. It became a free business in June 2011 and changed its Chinese name to Tian Mao (Tmall) in January 2012. As of October 2013 it was the eighth most visited site in China.
On April 29, 2013, Alibaba reported a speculation of US$586 million in Sina Weibo. As indicated by Reuters, the deal "should drive more web traffic to Alibaba's Taobao Marketplace, China's largest e-commerce site with a consumer focus. On August 1, 2013, Alibaba launched Weibo for Taobao, which allows users to link Sina Weibo accounts with Taobao accounts.
